The Sunshine Coast earns its name by the incredibly mild weather year round and an average of nearly six hours of sunshine per day. Its picturesque landscape between ocean and mountains of giant Douglas fir trees offers an unlimited world of possibilities to its visitors. The communities and parks providing a unique blend of nature, culture, history and the arts.

On the mainland of Vancouver and the Coast Mountain Range, visitors enjoy driving the scenic Sea to Sky Highway to Whistler carved into the mountainous shoulders offering incredible ocean views, strolling the seawall around Stanley Park, or visiting the many galleries and artists' studios located on Granville Island and throughout the surrounding areas. Discover a haven of artists, numerous festivals, gondola vistas of the city, wonderful winter skiing, suspension bridges, and many secluded sandy beaches to comb over!

History:
The First Nations Coast Salish inhabited the coastal regions of British Columbia and the Pacific Northwest for thousands of years prior to the arrival of European explorers in the late 1700's. Within the Coast Salish, there were approximately 20 nations, with their own individual language and culture. The Sliammon band who inhabited the northern tip of the Sunshine Coast were a population of many as 20,000 members.

They had more than 10 permanent villages and numerous seasonal camp sites along the coast. Seasonal villages were inhabited based the time of year and abundance of natural resources like fish, small animals, and berries. Transportation for their journeys was mostly by deeply carved cedar canoe.
